Tour News 2010

Well in my last update on the website I said I was taking a few months off but did not intend to take off as long as has happened. I got so lazy I was on the point of stopping altogether but eventually got off my arse and went back to work. Eventually, all that time at home gave me an opportunity to begin an idea I had for many years.

Title. “Who Killed James Joyce”

A passionate love of poetry in the English and Irish language has led to the majority of the songs on my past 5 CDS been poems set to music. It has always been an idea of mine brewing for some time to devote a whole night of Irish poetry as Gaeilge and in English set to music by me in the traditional idiom.

This has resulted in my one-man show idea on the tales, capers, and works of the following poets in alphabetical order. Michael Coady, Paul Durcan, Phil Gaston, Oliver St John Gogarty, Michael Hartnett. Seamus Heaney, Rita Ann Higgins, James Joyce, Patrick Kavanagh, Máirtín Ó Direáin, Connie O Halloran, Mary O Malley, Seán Ó Ríordáin, Padraig Pearse, Louis Mc Neice, WB Yeats, Oscar Wilde. I have received permission by both the living and the estate of those deceased to include their poetry in my show.

It will feature snippets of humourous stories and anecdotes about the writers giving the audience a bit of insight into the personalities of the poets. This will be hiopefully finished and launched at Cúirt Festival in Galway 2011, going on to writers week in Listowel and the Clifden Arts week. More dates to be announced.

After four years the launch date for my new album ‘The Walker Of The Snow’ is now set for February 2011.

'Message Of Peace’

‘Message Of Peace’ tells the amazing story of a lesser-known Irish hero John Boyle O’Reilly. In this show Tyrrell effortlessly traces his journey from early childhood set against a backdrop of famine, revolution, Fenianism and penal servitude for life in Australia and his great escape to the USA.

A chance visit to a lace-curtained Irish shop in Manhattan led to the discovery of “1000 Years of Irish Poetry” and a lifelong love affair between Seán Tyrrell and this book. It would influence his life and music ever after. Three of O’Reilly’s poems from that book formed the backbone of his first recording. Tyrrell’s new production, “Message Of Peace” is the story of the discovery of the book and the resultant admiration and appreciation of John Boyle O’Reilly. It is O’Reilly’s story told by dialogue and song.

‘The Midnight Court’

Fri. Oct 2nd Celtic Festival Rothe House Kilkenny.

You will be led across a dance-floor of words so lovely, so dire and so hopeful, great songs ranging from Oscar Wilde to John Lennon. Amazing  story, history, now, relevant, passionate heroic. The life of a majestic visionary soul, poet, rebel, courage of a freedom fighter, commitment of a civil rights activist.

The Midnight Court

Sometime in the latter part of the 18th century, Brian Merryman wrote a poem in Irish called “Cuirt an Mhean Oiche”. After Frank O’Connor translated it into English in 1945, the work was banned by the British Censorship Board. Many years later, a copy of David Marcus’ translation was left behind in a hostel Sean Tyrrell was care-taking . . . . MORE
